Software Engineering

Sydney, NSW, Australia

This is a full time role with hybrid working, 3 days a week in our Sydney office (Surry Hills).

Everlab is an Australian healthtech startup building the platform to look after people's health for their entire lives. It's not just an app, it's the infrastructure connecting every available healthcare service to give you comprehensive data on your health and provide personalised care.

We've had a 23x increase in revenue since June 2025 and recently announced our $65m Series A round, making this an exciting time to join Everlab as we expand globally.

You'll lead a single squad, owning its delivery, its health and its people, and you'll do that through a durable system rather than through heroics, in partnership with a Tech Lead who owns the squad's technical direction. This is a foundational hire as Everlab introduces engineering management, so alongside running your own squad you'll have real scope to help define how the function works, from the operating rhythm to career expectations to how we hire and grow engineers as the team scales.

Day to day that means planning and unblocking so the squad ships predictably, setting goals and an operating rhythm with your Tech Lead, and keeping the “why” legible so everyone understands the reasoning behind the work in front of them. You'll be technically credible enough to engage in design decisions and surface risk without needing to out-code the team, and close enough to the work to recognise when a delivery problem is really a technical one.

People management sits squarely with you: performance, careers, hiring, retention, and the difficult conversations, handled early and honestly rather than left to fester. You'll grow engineers deliberately, sponsoring the people ready to stretch and coaching the ones who are stuck, and you'll make effective use of AI the squad's default way of working, as genuine everyday practice rather than box-ticking. We're building in regulated healthcare, so privacy and safety are part of how your squad works rather than a step at the end.

What You Will Do

  • Own the squad's delivery and health: planning, unblocking, and an operating rhythm that ships predictably, with the system doing the work rather than individual heroics.

  • Own people management: performance, careers, hiring, retention, and the difficult conversations, handled early and honestly.

  • Set the squad's goals and rhythm: work with the Tech Lead to define what the squad is aiming at and how it operates, and keep the “why” legible to everyone in it.

  • Grow engineers deliberately: sponsor the people who are ready to stretch, coach the ones who are stuck, and make career progression something engineers can see rather than guess at.

  • Make effective use of AI the squad's default: build genuine everyday practice into how the team works, not box-ticking, and share what works with the wider engineering group.

What We're Looking For

  • Engineering management experience: you've managed software engineering teams with genuine ownership of both delivery and people growth, in startup or scale up company environments.

  • Predictable delivery: you have a track record of shipping predictably through process and system rather than heroics, and you can show us what you put in place and why it held.

  • Technically credible: you can engage in design decisions and surface risk with your team without needing to out-code them, and you know when a delivery problem is really a technical one.

  • Strong people-management craft: honest feedback, real coaching, and hiring you're accountable for, including the conversations most managers put off.

  • Takes healthcare seriously: you understand the responsibility that comes with building in a regulated healthcare environment, and you treat privacy and safety as part of how the squad works.

  • Bonus points: experience introducing or maturing engineering management practice in a scaling organisation, and familiarity with our stack of TypeScript, Node.js, GraphQL, React and GCP.
