Applied Economist, Marketplace Expansion (Remote)

Full-Time, Remote / Salary, Exempt

Includes Exceptional Benefits, Flexible PTO, Flexible Schedule, Equity

Steno is growing! We’re looking for an Applied Economist, Marketplace Expansion, to join our winning team, which is revolutionizing the court reporting industry every single day. We’re a diverse team from all over the country (and beyond), and we’re crazy about redefining the boundaries of an outdated industry.

In this role, you’ll tackle a core two-sided marketplace challenge: predicting how our marketplace will perform in geographies we haven’t entered yet, on both the supply and demand side. Using historical data from 20+ existing markets, you’ll build models that forecast firm retention, repeat volume, stenographer retention, utilization, and broader marketplace dynamics to guide new market launches.

This is a highly analytical role in which your work directly informs strategic decisions on resource allocation, pricing strategy, and supply incentives. You’ll work with real marketplace data that includes cross-side effects and feedback loops, and you’ll see your models tested quickly as we expand and iterate across new states. This role sits within the Finance organization and reports to the Director of Strategic Finance, with access to Steno’s central data infrastructure maintained by the Data team.

Who are you?

You’re a data-driven problem solver who enjoys digging into complex marketplace dynamics and answering questions where the data isn’t perfect—or doesn’t exist yet. You’re comfortable working independently, making thoughtful assumptions, and clearly communicating both insights and limitations.

You understand that interventions on one side of a marketplace can cascade to the other, and you enjoy reasoning through those effects rather than ignoring them. You like seeing your work have a real business impact, and you can translate statistical findings into plain language for non-technical partners in Finance and Operations.

If you’re looking for a company that offers support, guidance, an abundance of killer giphys, and unlimited potential to grow into your best self, you can bet we’d love to have you too.

On a regular basis you will

  • Build and maintain predictive models to forecast marketplace performance in new geographies
  • Validate forecasts against historical holdout data and track predictions as new markets launch
  • Analyze retention and utilization trends across both sides of the marketplace
  • Work with messy operational data from scheduling, billing, and CRM systems
  • Design analyses that account for cross-side effects and feedback loops
  • Extract data using SQL and develop reproducible Python or R code
  • Partner with Finance and Operations to translate analysis into actionable recommendations
  • Iterate on models and assumptions as real-world performance diverges from expectations

You’re gonna crush it if

  • You have 3–5+ years of experience building predictive models in Python or R
  • You’re comfortable with statistical foundations like hypothesis testing, causal inference, time-series analysis, and uncertainty quantification
  • You’ve worked in B2B marketplaces, staffing, or service platforms with two-sided supply-demand dynamics
  • You can extract and explore data using SQL
  • You think rigorously about selection bias, causation vs. correlation, and model validation
  • You can explain statistical results clearly to non-technical stakeholders
  • You’re comfortable operating in ambiguity and making reasonable assumptions with incomplete data
  • You’re a self-starter with high agency who can work independently with minimal direction

Bonus points if

  • You have training or experience in econometrics, including instrumental variables or causal inference methods
  • You’ve built geographic expansion or market-entry models
  • You understand labor market dynamics or two-sided marketplace equilibrium
  • You’ve worked with cohort retention data or survival analysis
  • You can reason about network effects and cross-side spillovers
  • You’ve designed or analyzed experiments in marketplace contexts
  • You’re familiar with Bayesian modeling or probabilistic approaches

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary - $130,000 - $170,000
  • Health, Vision, & Dental Benefits - low-cost health plans that free up mind space and unlock our employees' best work
  • Wellness/Mental Health - shared benefits to be used among employees and families
  • Flexible Paid Time Off - allowing employees to find balance in their lives
  • Options of Equity - we know our success is nothing without our team
  • Access to a company-provided 401(k) account
  • A home office setup and a monthly stipend to offset internet and phone costs
